Singapore: Changi Point and Pulau Ubin

The photos in this gallery are the results of two years of work that I have done on Changi Point and Pulau Ubin. Changi Point is at the eastern tip of Singapore. It has one of the smallest residential area in Singapore in the shape of Changi Village, well known for its good food and old shops. From Changi Village, one need to cross the bridge at Changi Creek to Changi Beach. Changi Beach is one of the main beaches of Singapore and it is very popular for family outings and kayakers. During WWII, it was the site of massacre of Chinese males by Japanese soldiers. At Changi Point, there is a jetty that one could take a bum boat to Pulau Ubin. Pulau Ubin is the last major rural community of Singapore. In the late 19th Century to the late 20th Century, it is the main granite quarry of Singapore. Up to the early 1980s, Pulau Ubin still had a community that was large enough to have a Primary school and community centre. Since 1990, the community population steadily decline with the closure of the quarries and farms. Today, it has not more than 50 families left catering to the weekend tourist trade in the form of bicycle rental, food and beverage. Pulau Ubin has also a relatively unknown spiritual side in the form of numerous temples and shrines. It even has a shrine to a German girl who reportedly died during WWI when the British authorities attempted to intern her and her family. The photos are arranged in such a way that the viewers are brought through the logical sequence of the sights of Changi Point and Pulau Ubin in the form of a virtual tour.

Nice work & photos taken,the other side of a relaxing life tat singapore island cannot find. Remember the last visit to the thai temple there.. Hopefully it remain un-change so tat we could be able to share the feel of the 60-70's. The resort there was relaxing,especially in the evening & nite while u can seat along the sea,there's a old slping net near the alighting point if i did not remember wrongly,it's very relaxing there. Keep up the gd work!

Hi Peter, I am inpressed with your black and white captures on Pulau Ubin , indeed they are reflective well of our humble living in the 60's - 70's and a bit of 80's ( what was left remaining ). Much of Pulau Ubin have gone with time - whatever that remains you have indeed captured the essence of its memorable past. With two other course mates we are in the process of developing a website on Pulau Ubin - with the main purpose of providing information to both locals and international visitors as well as to our new migrants and those expats ( on temporary residency ). Giving them a glimpse into our Singapore's past. Hopefully with more awareness and increase visitation on this remaining undeveloped island in Singapore, this will continue to influence both the Governement and People of Singapore to preserve Pulau Ubin as much as it is now and protecting its natural habitats and saving whats remaining at Chek Jawa, perpetualting it as a permanent exhibit for both nature lovers and citysiders alike - keeping this very humble patch of remaining land that we all have and not to turn it into yet another modern mega island resort, for the sake of the present , the new and the future generation Singaporeans, We planned to dedicate a section on black and white captures on Pulau Ubin and would wonder if you would allow some of your captures be featured on our website - www.pulauubin.com.sg. cheers bell tan, bi guang and allan hui

Dear Peter, I am very impressed with your atmospheric and evocative photographs. I never visited Pulau Ubin but I spent many hours at Changi Beach, particularly the Point, and took many photographs (not at all up to your high standard) between 1963 and 1966 when I was based at RAF Changi. The beach looks just the same in your photos and the kampong life depicted in the Ubin series was the normal way of life for Malay families all around the coast of Singapore in the 1960s. Hi Peter My family and I used to go to Ubin for the weekend during the 60's with various other expat families and stayed at a Bungalow somewhere on Ubin which had a great rock in the ocean in front of it that us kids used to climb on amongst all the crabs that lived on it also. Also used to water ski right around the island it was great fun. Certainly brought back some memories.

These are wonderful photos, I am Janes sister, our dad was based at Changi Air Force base and we lived on Bedok Rd at one point. We also lived on Jalan Chempaka Puteh for several years. What a wonderful place and such super memories. We used to go to Siglap to youth club. We also were members at China beach club. We spent many wonderful hours at Padang beach and went many times to Bedok Rd near the beach to get Satay and great food. I often think of all the wonderful times we haqd there. Thanks for the great phots and memories. Susan

PS. Changi beach is where myself and my Brothers and Sisters spent numerous hours when school finished. We would hop in taxi and stop in the Changi village for a bottle of Coca Cola and the must have Roti ( a large bread roll filled with salad) then we would wander down to Changi beach for hours. Great site. I lived in Singapore for three years in the late 60's on Bedok road. I feel very lucky to have spent some of my childhood in such a lovely climate. I imagine it has changed considerably now. Thanks for all the wonderful pictures. regards, Miss Jane

wow! great gallery. in some cases i wish the light had been more dramatic -- heavier darks and more brilliant lights. really loved the boats -- both on the water at night, and beached at low tide in day. haven't been to Singapore since 1980, but loved this retrospective of the non-city side.

Peter, don't let your friends tell you your photos are "ugly". They are most definitely NOT. You have a very good eye for black and white and I enjoyed visiting your gallery.
