We sailed to Cape Horn from the east end of the Beagle Channel, arriving just at sunrise. There is a Chilean naval station on the island comprising the cape and also a large monument to the many seafarers who have died in the waters off the usually tempestuous cape.
Our ship sailed entirely around the island and then proceeded easterly on our course toward the Falkland Islands (Malvinas). We were accompanied part of the way by albatrosses gliding in the ships "bow wave" of air.
We visited Stanley, the only town in the Falkland Islands. It is a spread out town along the south shore of a secure anchorage. It was originally founded to support maritime interests in the extreme south Atlantic but has also been a significant site for sheep herding.
