We had one 'visit' our backyard a few years ago. It came to steal the wild rabbit that a red-tail hawk had killed a few minutes before. Given the size difference betwen the two birds, the hawk abondoned its kill. This vulture stood about 30 inches tall. The poor rabbit, by the way, had lived with its mate in our yard undisturbed up to that day. Because no children run asround or through our yard, it is a preferred spot for bunnies, a ground hog, and a variety of smaller birds including robins, purple finches, and others.
