Pigment Fragment from Edgar Degas' Dancers Practising in the Foyer

Glyptoteket, Copenhagen, Denmark

This simulated glass plate photograph, taken around 1880, showcases pigment extracted from Edgar Degas' painting, "Dancers Practising in the Foyer." The painting is currently on exhibition at Glyptoteket, Copenhagen, Denmark, titled: "Degas' Obsession".

Captured with a sensor through a Zeiss microscope using X-ray fluorescence, this image transforms the unseen into a tangible object. It's a digital photo of a digital display of a photo taken at the Getty Conservation Institute during scientific analysis of the painting. The microscopic sample was 200 micrometers (0.2 millimeters) in size.

The analysis showed that the painting contained 14 layers and had been worked on by Degas for close to 30 years.
