Following the great Arab revolt in 1936, which included a general trading strike, the Jewish population of Haifa couldn't get their basic food supplies .Consequently, the committee of Hadar Ha'Carmel Neighbourhood decided to build a structure designated for a market,on a sloping plot of land on the eastern end of Sirkin street. The new market was earmarked to replaceme the Arab markets in downtown .
Following a tender for construction plans of a building to host the market,Architect Gershtel won it. The construction works of the Building started upon those plans & the work was concluded in 1940.
The inside of the building was considered glorious at those days. The lighted inner space, as well as the transparent ceiling & the round facade, were unique.
Unfortunately, not much remained of the glory of the building, although the market still functions, though not in full scale. At the lower level one may find food stuffs, while at the crumble upper level, there are counters & shops for clothing & household materials.
Currently, but actually for many years now, the real & very lively market (since Talpiot market was planned) has been operating in the open at Sirkin street & other streets nearby Talpiot market.
