The events I remember from eigth grade are as follows: We have Miss Davies, Mr. Wulterkins,
Miss Pritzl and Mr. Hoffman as teachers. It is generally held among the male students that
if one draws parallels with Gilligan's Island that Miss Davies would be Mary Ann and Miss Pritzl
would be Ginger. Mr. Wulterkins has a sweet Kharmann Ghia that he parks in the back of the
school. DL Reeder is almost unbeatable in chess which he plays every free moment he has.
Betsy McCabe demonstrates her incredible memory by performing blindfolded in front of the
eigth grade classes. She memorizes 20 random objects (called out by her classmates) written
on a blackboard and can repeat them forwards and backwards on request. She can also play piano
"by ear" which we find out means without sheet music. The class gets a day off to watch the
movie "Bless the Beasts and the Children". The movie is cut short by the school staff because it
contains a scene where young boys pee into a pot. We never get to see the ending. We get to see
the movie "Born Free" instead. Later that year several classmates sneak into "The Exorcist".
A couple times during the year we get to go bowling at Hadler Lanes. Kevin Gilbert and I get to
leave school early to set up the shoes. We find that if you put on bowling shoes and build up
enough static electricity that you can reset the "Pong" game without paying 25 cents. We sometimes
call Miss Pritzl "Miss Pretzl" because we think it sounds funny. The eigth grade classes are
divided into Winter Olympic Teams. The skiing relay is made up of John Huber and Peggy Thompson.
John skis classic cross country style while Peggy "skates" the course on her downhill skis.
Our team easily wins the relay. Bill Koch later copies Peggy's technique to win an Olympic Medal.
Kevin Gilbert can slide for 20 yards on hard-packed snow aided by platform shoes with 3 inch wooden heels.
We take a field trip to the Milwaukee Public Library. Near the library American Motors Corporation (AMC)
has a Gremlin displayed on a large concrete block. DL Reeder says his middle name is "Lee" and
that he is a direct descendent of the General Robert E. Lee. We start businesses and sell stock.
Our class manufactures wooden letters cut from pine boards that can be nailed onto mailbox posts.
Parents seem to make the best customers. We break even! The track team does well. Mr. DeStefano
and Mr. Neuwirth are our coaches. Bob Hall, Kevin Scroggins, Bob Pachner and Ron Weber and Kevin
Scroggins team up for a 4 x 220 relay. Sam Porter breaks his arm in the middle of the season and
still wins hurdle events running with a fiberglass cast. As a civics assignment we build a huge
model city on a large piece of plywood. Watergate goes public. At the end of the year we go out to
a nature reserve on a field trip. On the way home we stop at a roller skating dome in the middle
of nowhere. WHAT A BLAST!!!
