Tribute

Melbourne, Florida

Long abandoned roadside markers denote the section of the Sarno Extension that the three young people, including two teens, were killed when the car they were in crashed into a canal. Autumn Gomme, 15, Jeremy Charles, 21, and Michael Reinertsen, 16, were killed. Wreckless driving on a poorly maintained road were to blame.

The "Sarno Extension" is actually a three+ mile long dirt road that runs from the Interstate 95/Eau Gallie Blvd interchange, west towards Lake Washington. The area is popular with four wheelers, motorcyclists and air-boaters and the twin lakes (one of which feeds the canal the above three perished in) is used by the Brevard County Sheriff's Office dive team for practices.

We were good friends of all three... We only found the site because of a yearly ritual. I've been going yearly to pay tribute near christmas. I found the picture because after getting back from the extension today, we decided to try and look up the old article. It still hurts, and I still remember the funeral day like it was yestreday.

I THOUGHT THAT THIS PICTURE WAS GREAT. I ACTUALLY HAD A CLASS WITH AUTUMN MY TENTH GRADE YEAR. THEY ANNOUCED HER PASSING AT SCHOOL DURING 1ST PERIOD AND I NEVER HEARD THE ANNOUNCMENT BECAUSE THE CLASS WAS TOO LOUD. I ATE LUNCH WITH AUTUMN EVERYDAY AND WHEN IT WAS TIME FOR LUNCH MY BEST FRIEND TIFFANY WAS CRYING HISTERCALLY AND I DIDNT KNOW WHY. ALL I REMEMBER WAS HER SAYING SHE DROWNED TO DEATH. SHE COULDN'T SWIM. I WENT THROUGH THE WHOLE LUNCH PERIOD WONDERING WHERE AUTUMN WAS AND IT WASN'T UNTIL 4TH PERIOD THAT I FOUND OUT. IT'S A SHAME THAT SOMEONE SO AMAZING COULD BE TAKEN FROM THIS EARTH SO EARLY, BUT I BELIEVE THAT THERE IS A REASON FOR EVERYTHING. HER ACCIDENT EFFECTED ME AND TO THIS DAY I WEAR MY SEATBELT EVERYDAY BECAUSE OF THIS ACCIDENT. I LOVE AND MISS AUTUMN AND HOPEFULLY ONE DAY I CAN SEE HER AGAIN.

I'm finally back in Brevard after seven years, only to visit my favorite hang out spot and find your loved one's markers. I'm very sorry to learn of their passing and I said a prayer for them when I passed by the memorial. It’s a tragic memory that's now attached to a place I've become so fond of.

Thank you for the tribute to my beloved sister, Autumn Noell Gomme. Tonight marks the second anniversary of the fatal accident that took her life as well as two of her friends. They say that time heals all wounds. I disagree. Time makes it easier for you to cope with the loss of such a beautiful person, a person who literally enriched your life. But it certainly does not heal the pain. It's far too deep.
