the original Bierhaven was located at the current Jufferstraat. After this port was dug, the heirs on the east and west were issued in May 1614. The Bierhaven name appears in writing shortly after that year. The Bierhaven name was possibly a tribute to the important Rotterdam beer brewing industry. Another name was Oostersche Dwarshaven, so named because of its location in relation to the Glas, Wijn and Scheepmakershaven. The name Schijtebotershaven also appeared in the first half of the 17th century, named after: Gillis Gillisz, nicknamed Schijteboter, owner of some houses and heirs to the harbor. After the harbor was filled in 1898, it was named Gedempte Bierhaven. East of the harbor, a street was laid in the early 17th century, which became known as Bierstraat. This street is still in the same place, while the Bierhaven is now a port of entry of the Leuvehaven.
