From Gombrčn, you can go to the sanctuary of Santa Maria de Montgrony. According to legend, Count Arnau was responsible for building the 144 steps cut into the rock, that connect a small inn to the Romanesque church of Sant Pere de Montgrony. This is the project that spurred his bad reputation. Apparently he promised to pay with wheat each measure of stone dug out from the rock. But he never paid. The legend has turned Count Arnau into the quintessential myth of medieval Catalonia. It is based on a popular song that has survived the pass of time. According to tradition, many centuries ago, a certain Count Arnau committed two sins: to succumb to the pleasures of the flesh with an abbess and not paying his vassals for some work they had done for him. The consequence was a punishment that apparently still goes on: ride eternally on a black horse, accompanied by a group of evil dogs.
