At the end of the nineteenth century, Haro had an economic edge as a result of its numerous industries, some of which were new. Thus, and on the initiative of the Marquis of Francos, the Queen Regent María Cristina awarded it the title of City by Royal Decree in 1891. As a consequence of this prosperity, in 1841, the town saw the inauguration of its Teatro Bretón de los Herreros and in 1886, the bullring, by the bullfighters Lagartijo and Frascuelo. In 1877, the project for electric street lighting was approved, inaugurated during the celebrations of Nuestra Señora De La Vega of 1890. Then, in 1892, a branch of the Bank of Spain began operations (quite unusual for such a small town) and, that same year, on the initiative of the Minister of Development, Linares Rivas, the Estación Enológica or enology centre was set up.
