Davadillo Castle
A Romanesque castle dating back to the 13TH century. Along with the shrine and the remains of other buildings, it is located on a hill overlooking the River Ebro, protecting the lands of La Sonsierra and La Rioja Alta from attack by Navarra. In the 18th century Alphonse X donated San Asensio to Davalillo which meant that Davalillo became a fairly important town. In 1515 the village began to undergo significant growth. After the war between Pedro I “The Cruel” and Enrique II, Davalillo fell into decline when La Rioja was broken down into estates, which was emphasised further by the disputes between the tenants of the castle and the lords of the town, thus leading to an increase in the population of San Asensio.
