An elegant Baroque building from the 18th century, built between 1753 and 1766 from sandstone ashlar pieces quarried from the surrounding area.
During construction of the building a group of stonemasons made up of Jose de Ituño, Bautista de Olave and Bernardino Ruiz de Azcárraga took part, master stonemasons who were able to unite several aesthetic ideas in the San Miguel Church. They managed to combine the Baroque façade imported from Italy with the finish on the tower of their own aesthetic design.
This is undoubtedly the most original and spectacular artwork of the eighteenth century buildings in La Rioja, particularly because of the singular shape of the facade structure. In spite of the fact that the set of curves had already been practiced at the Santo Cristo de Briones shrine, the most clearest precedent is the facade of “San Carlo alle Quatro Fontane” church in Rome, built by Borromini in the 17th century.
