Perched on top of a scenic hill above the Iregua Valley is the Castle of Clavijo. It is bordered to the north by the Ebro River and to the south by the Islallana and the Laturce mountains. In the valley below the castle, in the village of Aberite to be exact, the Criadores de Rioja winery, home to the wines of Castillo de Clavijo, is built into a hillside.
The Iregua Valley is proclaimed by some to be one of the most important winegrowing regions in the world. Natural characteristics of the valley influence the quality of the wines produced there. The valley floor is covered with fertile alluvial soils while rougher, stony soils are found on the gentle slopes that run along the sides of the valley.
