The city of Baeza was of strategic importance throughout all of its history. The Romans were probably the most instrumental in developing Baeza into what it is today. They built a large settlement known as Biatia. During the Visigoth period, around 7C, Baeza was known as Biattiensis and was classified as an Episcopal see.
The Moors named the city Biesa. It was the capital of a large Taifa Kingdom that stretched from the Guadalquivir to the Sierra Morena mountains. It was under the Moorish rule, that Baeza (Biesa) developed into an important commercial and political center.
