The basilica was restored and extended by various popes during the Middle Ages , including Eugene III (1145-1153), Nicholas IV (1288-92) and Clement X (1670-76). Inside one of the major works is the splendid cycle of mosaics on the Life of the Virgin , dating from the V century , which still shows the stylistic features of late Roman art. More hieratic, and closer to Byzantine art are the mosaics of the triumphal arch, with scenes from the Infancy of Christ according to the apocryphal Gospels .
Medieval period is also the style marble floor Cosmati , as can be seen in the tomb of Cardinal Rodriguez ( 1299 ), the right of the altar.
In the fourteenth century , during the pontificate of Nicholas IV was made the mosaic apse , with the Coronation of Mary , the work of Jacopo Torriti , a monk Franciscan . In the same period are the mosaics of the facade, designed by Filippo Rusuti .
