In 1793 Haydn bought this former suburb house in Mariahilf, at Haydngasse 19, near today’s famous Mariahilferstraße, and had it converted and another storey added.
This house, which served as his home for the last 12 years of his life (1797–1809), was where Haydn composed the majority of his late works, among them the grandiose oratorios: "The Creation" (1796–1798) and "The Seasons" (1799–1801). Haydn also gave lessons to Beethoven here.
Here he died on May 31, 1809.
Now the house serves as a Haydn museum and is a must for all Haydn fans.
