The Zwinger (Der Dresdner Zwinger) is a palace built between 1710 and 1732 in Rococo style, commissioned by Augustus the Strong, elector of Saxony.
With its large inner courtyard, it was used for court festivities, tournaments and fireworks, also as the orangery and exhibition gallery.
Today, the Zwinger is a museum complex that contains the Old Masters Picture Gallery, the Porcelain Collection, the Armory and the Royal Cabinet of Mathematical and Physical Instruments.
