The Royal Lazienki Park (The Royal Baths Park) is the largest park in Warsaw and one of Europe's finest parks.
It was established in the 17th century by Tylman van Gameren, in the baroque style, for the prince Stanislaus Herakliusz Lubomirski. It took the name Lazienki ("Baths") from a bathing pavilion that was located there.
In 1764 the gardens were acquired by Stanislaus August Poniatowski after his election as King of Poland.
The now classicist-style gardens became king's life's work. The park-and-palace complex was designed by Italian-Polish architect Domenico Merlini and landscape gardener Jan Christian Schuch.
Palace on the Water in the Royal Lazienki Park is one of the most exelent works of Polish architectural classicism.
Founded upon the early, XVII-century building, it was remodeled between 1772 and 1793 by Domenico Merlini and became a summer residence for king Stanislaus August Poniatowski.
The palace situated on the lake is called the "Palace on the Water". The building is dominated by an attika supported by columns, and featuring statues of mythological figures.
Today, on the ground floor visitors can (among other rooms) see so-called "Bacchus-room", the royal baths, the ballroom, the portrait cabinet, and in the picture gallery - some works by Rubens and Rembrandt.
