CASTLE WILHEMINENBERG AND GALLITZINBERG HILL

The Gallitzinberg (today's Mount Wilhelminenberg, 449 m) is a forested hill in the West of Austria's capital, Vienna.
It is remarkable because of its multifaceted history, and because it functions as an important recreational area in the Western uphill part of the densely populated Ottakring district.
The name Gallitzinberg traces to Prince Dmitri Mikhailovich Galitzin, a Russian ambassador to Vienna, one of the first owners of the land.
The main historical buildings are: Schloss Wilhelminenberg, an imperial palace from the early 20th century, the Konrad Lorenz Institute for Ethology, now managed by the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Research Institute for Wildlife Ecology which belongs to the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna.

The first palace on today's Mount Wilhelminenberg was built in 1781 by the local landlord Count Franz Moritz of Lascy. Then Prince Dmitri Mikhailovich Galitzin, a Russian ambassador to Vienna, bought the property in 1784. Later, Schloss Wilhelminenberg and the property changed owners a few times until 1824. Then the French Prince Julius of Montleart and his wife Maria Christine bought Schloss Wilhelminenberg Palace and the surrounding lands. In 1838 he had the leisure palace built bigger by adding two more wings in the neo-Classical style. The Prince of Montleart died in 1865. His son Moritz acquired the property after considerable legal battles and gave it to his wife Wilhelmine. Thus, he wanted the entire area be called "Wilhelminenberg". By this time, the hill was registered as "Gallitzinberg".
Prince Moritz of Montleart died in 1887 and was buried in a neo-Gothic chapel near the palace. His widow followed the local tradition and was active as a philanthropist - she is still known in the area as the "Angel of Mount Wilhelminenberg". She died in 1895.

The current palace.
In 1903 Archduke Leopold Salvator had the dilapidated building demolished and in the years to 1908 a palace in the Second Empire style was built according to plans of the architects Eduard Frauenfeld and Ignaz Sowinski.
During the World War I and World War II the castle was made a military hospital. A special education facility for girls with behavioral problems was operated from the 1950s until 1977.

Since May 2003 the chain Austria Trend Hotel refurbished Schloss Wilhelminenberg and re-opened it as a four-star hotel. It boasts 87 elegant rooms, a restaurant and a library, a terrace offering a beautiful panoramic view of Vienna, and a 120,000 m˛ park, which is open to the general public - ideal for walking around and enjoying some great views over the city. Castle Wilhelminenberg has become a popular location for large wedding parties and other celebrations.
