Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh is the capital as well as the largest city of Cambodia. In the 1920s it was known as the "Pearl of Asia", but during the time of the Khmer Rouge (19751979), it became famous for its nearby Killing Fields, when between 2 and 3 million people were slaughtered. The city is still draped in sadness, but visit the School of Fine Arts, which is making a major effort to restore the ancient Khmer arts, and you can feel the spirit of the people reviving.
