TAVY CLEAVE - Dartmoor

Tavy Cleave is one of the most dramatic and beautiful places on the Moor. Down below on the valley floor to the right you can hear the muted roar of the river Tavy as it cascades over the boulders making its way off Dartmoor, to the left and just beside you,the quieter watery sounds of the fast flowing leat. Look up and you'll see the rocky tors and usually hear the skylarks singing. If you want to get a really nice shot of this place, visit before the bracken (a modern infestation) has grown up too high and walk down to river level (take care if crossing it and don't even think of trying it when in flood). The viewpoint there lends itself to a nice "S" shape composition whilst at the same time emphasising the height of the tors. Many photographers have included the picturesque waterfalls, rapids and wild swimming spots in their compositions. To see the Cleave properly, those who are sure-footed enough to clamber over boulders (often hidden) on a path that isn't there all of the time, can continue past the source of the leat up the valley to Dead Lake where the valley opens out and another streams joins.

Here is a link to the excellent work of one of those who clearly understands this part of the moor and what's great about it:
