An old stovepipe, disused, beaten and bent flat to keep it out of mischief. Fortunately, also disconnected from the main flue.
The wall is black because this house once had a fire. There are blackened timbers in the roof as well, which was partially collapsed when the guy who restored the place (the aforesaid reprobate) bought it. He told us that back then there was snow in the cellar.
