The amazing plastic child

Serial xrays of a two year old child with a badly displaced femur fracture,
showing gradual realignment of the bone over the course of 6 months.

The image on the left was taken at the time of injury, with the leg in a fiberglass cast.
The middle image was at 6 weeks and the right image at 6 months post injury.

Children rarely need surgery for these types of fractures because dramatic plastic remodeling
(straightening of the bone during the healing process) is possible in the very young.

In addition to correcting axial or rotational malalignment, accelerated bone growth in the injured limb can correct 2 cm or more of shortening. Believe it or not !
