We spent a good amount of Memorial Day at Fort Snelling in St. Paul. This fort was established in 1819 and continued active use by the Army until 1990. The historic part of the fort has been reconstructed resulting in a very nice site. During special days they have a full compliment of activities. I especially enjoyed watching them fire a salute round from a replica six pounder. It makes a good bang and there is plentiful smoke. Additionally, there was a cool smoke ring that lingered for ten seconds or so.
Firing a salute involves putting a small amount of black powder in the gun. It is not tamped. The result is that the smoke and powder pukes out the muzzle. If, on the other hand there were a full charge of powder as well as a shot, I think the result would be very satisfying to watch. I now have on the bucket list observing the firing of a live round from a muzzle loading cannon.
