We traveled through Wyoming to Montana today. One stop was the Little Bighorn battlefield where George Armstrong Custer made his famous last stand. It was pretty interesting to me because we listened to three different people tell the story, and each version was the same. In a nutshell, due to a number of SNAFUs, George and four companies of the 7th Cavalry got wiped out in a battle that lasted a few hours. What I hadn't realized is that the remaining companies held out on an adjacent hill for several days and were eventually rescued by another unit. The battlefield is interesting because there is a white marker where each cavalry man fell. They are of white marble and their placement is based on the graves detail which came a couple days later to take care of the dead. There are also some red markers which represent where Indians fell. The have been recently placed there based on the oral tradition of the tribes. This photo is of the marker for Custer. His bones were later removed and re-interred at West Point.
