We decided to go over to Fort Stevens today and watch the Civil War reenactment and visit all the displays there. It was a lot of fun. There were 1800 participants which includes lots of wives and children camped out in period accomodations. They stage two battles every day which includes lots of rifle shooting and cannon shooting. The area has a nice hill where bleachers are erected. You get a great view of the battle from this position. Here you see the bad guys on the other side of the field attacking the good guys on this side. In our part of the woods this is known as the war of Northern Agression.
There were no battles in Oregon. Oregon did raise seven regiments, several of which stayed in Oregon to protect the gold fields from the Indians, not the Confederates. This reenactment was held at Fort Stevens which was a shore battery built to protect the mouth of the Columbia River from Confederate attack. It was later used in WW1 and WW2. It has long since been decommissioned and is now a state park. Then only actual battles were with the Indians called the Snake Wars (Shoshone Indians were called the Snakes because of their sign language symbol).
