Salmon season is in full swing here at the mouth of the Columbia River. The boat ramps are clogged and trailers and trucks are parked everywhere. I went to a viewpoint here in Hammond just to see what was going on. There was a truck parked there and a lady with binoculars was sitting in it and writing down stuff on a clipboard. I struck up a conversation with her. She was from Fish and Wildlife and was monitoring the festivities (along with four others at other places). She said they were having a good season. She and her cohorts keep track of the amount of salmon taken (apparently by interviewing fishermen when they come ashore) and based on that adjust the length of the season. This is a shot of the Columbia from Hammond looking toward the North side of the Megler Bridge that connects Astoria with Washington State.
