The Prime Meridian line.

Greenwich Observatory.

Almost every tourist has a photo taken of them straddling the Prime Meridian line.
One foot in the West, one in the East.

Since no one knows whether the line is correct, mark a few more, put up signs and cut down the waiting period. And is it correct anyway, since it was measured tectonic plate drift will have moved it.

I get it,its a trick photograph. And the trick is there are so many lines, some straight, some curvy, some twisted, you pays your money, you take your choice.

Dave, I have felt the pain of gravity, but not yet brevity.
So many pleasures to sample before I shuffle off this mortal coil.
With apologies to some clever little bleeder.

John, I am willing to endure the pain of brevity in the interest of maintaining our cordial Trans-Atlantic relationship.

Thanks Dave, we really appreciated getting the short version.

I can explain the use of tickets, but I must summarize in the interest of brevity.
Tickets are part of a sophisticated attendance-tracking system. Tickets are saved at the point of collection. Then at the end of every day (GMT of course) they are counted. That yields a number representing the number of tickets used on any given day. That figure is multiplied by a factor that takes into consideration the avareage number of issued tickets that are not used per day due to loss, forgetfulness, change of mind, theft, incompetence, flight to Putney, etc. By careful calculation with a Resistive Fratostatic Abacus that works only with meridian prime numbers, a team of mathematicians then determines how likely it is that the number of tickets issued equals the number of visitors that day. That result is used as the basis for begging. Please contact me if this summary requires elaboration.

Larry, the system here is you go to the ticket desk to get a ticket, the ticket is free,
Then you go to the entrance to show your free ticket to get in.
The people running the Observatory are short of money. They put up notices begging for donations.

Yes Dave, the Prime Meridian Line is the most popular spot at the Observatory. People queue to have their photo standing across it.

Do they have to pay double for this opportunity?

Are the people near the fence in line on the line?
