The island, and the river, and the banks close by. Named after the Eel Pies made in a tavern on the island. Now demolished.

I was in the Sea Cadet Guard of Honour at the opening of the bridge. I also did the scripture reading on the Embankment as part of the ceremony. Wonder if anyone has photos or cine (video?) of the eveny?

My husband and I met at Eel Pie Island of legendary fame on the sixties. We met in 1964 and have just this year celebrated our 50th anniversary - it doesn't feel that long though!

I was telling my children about the clubs and places I frequented in my youth and Eel Pie was one of them so googled and looked at this site. I live in Edmonton Alberta and have for over 40 years so can not just take them there for a visit ! I also went to Tiffin School leaving in 1960 and remember a John Cox a year or so ahead of me. When I went to EPI it was a Jazz club and all the big bands of the day played there including Mr. Aker Bilk. There was not a bridge when I first started going there. Just a very dodgy ferry !!

I live in Seattle, USA, where I have lived for a long time. I spent my teen-age years living in Kingston-0n-Thames. Went to school at Tiffins and owned a kiyak which I used to store in Turks boat house along with all the schools racing shells. Made frequent trips around the island as well as up to Hampton Court. I just heard a radio program on a public radio station featuring Eel Pie island which brought back many wonderfull memories which I have been sharing with my wife who has never been to that area and thus can't understand why I felt so emotional about it. On a differant note, must mention how proud I have been as we have been watching the Olympics. I don't know if any guys who went to Dunkirk are still around, but I remember it well and want to thank you all. Highest regards to you all.

When I was a child of 4 yrs in 1943-4 I lived on a boat moored by the island with my parents on the twickenham side we then moved to the other side and moored on the hotel jetty I have many happy memories of this time but one sad one The ferryman I think they called him budgy fell in one night and drowned we had him to thank for finding my mother and I when we got lost on the river in a very thick fog at night

As an officer in the US Army Air Corps, I was billeted at a bed and breakfast type house on Eel Pie Island about 1943-44. Access to the Island was by punt...we were in frequent trouble "borrowing" the puntman's punt.

My father owned a small bungalow at one end of the island during the 1950s where we would spend the occasional weekend. Before the bridge was built (tuppence to cross), we would be ferried across on the chain ferry. I vividly remember the café, Brocks, with its aviary.

What memories these pictures have brought back,I am 82 my Dad used to run dances on the Island in the forties,Cliffy Townsend Pete's Dad was in one of the bands,I remember all of us being rowed over in a very unsafe boat by a very small man with a very long pole,sixpence each way. Great stuff,thanks.

Larry, as far as I know, it was called Eel Pie Island because once there was an establishment there that sold lots of Eel Pies.

I went to a party on a boat moored at Eel Pie Island in the early 60's The owner was the actor Ian Hendry, who starred in the first series of the Avengers.
