This gallery contains a series of pictures I suspect are of a "Timberline" Brewer's Sparrow (Spizella breweri taverneri). I found this bird in the Chisos Basin (~6,000 ft elevation) of Big Bend NP on 13 May 2008. It was by itself, and very tame and unconcerned. I took over 100 pictures of it over about a 45 minute period while it foraged almost at my feet 6-10 feet away. Will be interested in drawing comments on possible disctinctive characters between it and the nominate race of Brewer's Sparrow (that were still common in lowland areas of Big Bend). The darker plumage characters, tameness of the bird, and habitat location (high in the Chisos) suggest Timberline Sparrow to me.
