The megapode is a small bird that lays large eggs - about twice the size of a chicken’s - in the warm volcanic sand at the base of the volcano. These eggs are a delicacy and are farmed only by men from a local village that have exclusive rights to the area. The birds bury these eggs more than six feet deep in the sandy soil, and the diggers must burrow down head-first to reach them. The sand can collapse and smother a man before anyone can hear him or find him. Many have died this way and increasingly the villagers do not want their young men harvesting these eggs. We bought a couple and boiled them in the ocean over a small vent, which was a pretty tricky exercise.
