Canterbury and its cathedral

The formal title of the cathedral is the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Christ at Canterbury. The Archbishop of Canterbury is the leader of the Church of England and the world-wide Anglican Communion. There has been a church on the site since 597 AD. An Anglo-Saxon cathedral on the site was replaced by a new building, in Normal style, which was built between 1070 and 1077. The east end was extended and enlarged in gothic style in the 12th century after a fire damaged the existing structure. The nave and transepts were rebuilt in the gothic style in the 14th century.

The cathedral became a place of pilgrimage after the murder on Tuesday, 29th December 1170 of the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Becket. He was canonised in 1173 after miracles were recorded in the period following his death.
