nicky rackard statue 2.jpg

Nicky Rackard was one of the best hurlers of all time . He played during the 1940s and 1950s at full forward for Wexford . Won two all Ireland medals and a league championship . In one of the most famous Finals of all time in 1956 when Wexford played Cork before a crowd of 83,000 [ incidentally not a record for a final ].
. Christy Ring of Cork was bidding for his 9th all Ireland medal - and with minutes to go - he unleashed a fierce shot at the wexford goal . Art Foley in the goal made a famous save . . Ring went in and shook Art Foleys hand - congratulating him on the save . Seconds later Rackard scored a goal for Wexford who won 2-14 to 2- 8 .So it was a double whammy for Cork - sadly !!. Ring never did get his 9th medal .
Even so in an unprecedented sporting gesture - Ring was chaired off the field by Nick O Donnell and Nicky Rackards brother Bobby . Can anyone imagine such things happening now !!!
