Shinbinthalyaung Reclining Buddha, Bagan (Dec 06)

Located within the enclosure walls of the Shwesandaw Pagoda is a long flat building housing the 11th-century Shinbinthalyaung Reclining Buddha. It is over 18 metres in length, and depicts the sleeping Buddha as its head is facing south. The walls of the brick building are erected very close around the reclining Buddha, thus making it virtually impossible to photograph the entire statue.

I have included the window, and the light streaming through it, in the picture. A glow of light in the distance is often associated with hope or even divinity, and in this picture of the sleeping Buddha, it deepens the interpretation of the scene.

A masterful composition : the young monk seems to come out of the reclining Buddha, his attitude is attentive and deferential, and the lights of candles and window create a superb mystical atmosphere. VV.
