Golden-Headed Tamarin (Sep 06)

Finally, after so many visits to the zoo, I came across this striking primate. I was so surprised by the sudden encounter, that I almost lost the opportunity to take pictures of it. This primate is seldom sighted, as it is free-roaming and usually keeps itself hidden among the trees, away from the crowds. Luckily, it hanged around long enough for me to take a few shots of it before bolting away into the trees and out of sight again.

Golden-headed tamarins are found in the southern part of the coastal state of Bahia in Brazil. They have a mane of long hairs on the top of the head, cheeks and throat, They are predominantly black in color except for the mane, the lower half of the limbs, and part of the tail, which is golden to reddish-orange in color. They are a tiny primate; an adult golden-headed tamarin has a head-and-body length of about 26 cm (10 in) and weighs about 0.6 kg (1.3 lb) only.

Pretty cute little fellow but I wouldn't want him clawing me! Great expression on his face! V
