Furong Ancient City (Aug 06)

They called this the ‘Furong Ancient City’, or ‘Hibiscus Classical Town’ as it was known locally. But it was not the real thing, and turned out to be just a modern housing development project constructed in classical Chinese architectural style. The itinerary even described it as the modern “Qingming Shang He Tu” which, to me, was sacrilegious. It has no right to lay claim to that, to gain fame. [Note: The “Qingming Shang He Tu” is the most famous painting of Zhang Zeduan, an imperial painter of the Northern Song Dynasty. It is a very wide (30 ft) painting of a city (believed to be Kaifeng) on a handscroll. The painting was a favourite of emperor Pu Yi (the last emperor of China), who took it with him to Manchuria and thus kept the original painting out of the collection of the National Palace Museum which was moved by the KMT government to Taiwan.] We took some pictures, walked around for a while, and left the place soon enough, for dinner and a night performance of Sichuan Opera.
