The ancient city of Lijiang is located in Yunnan Province of China. It is an intact ancient city which was first built in 1127 during the late Song Dynasty. Extending from the central Square Street (Sifangjie or Market Square), the streets and alleyways are in good order. Yuquan Spring water feeds the streams covering the city, which do not get muddy in the rainy season and are free of dust in the dry season. The streets are paved with local stone, and stone bridges & arches connect them across the streams to the residential houses which are all made of timber. They are the gems of Chinese ancient buildings. Today, Lijiang is the center of the Dongba Culture of the Naxi ethnic people, and also that of the Han, Tibetan and Bai peoples as well. It was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997.
