This camera has been modified for astro use... the IR filter and filter housing have been removed. The modifications were done by myself. Of course, it takes very good nebula pics... See below are some astrophotos taken with this camera. This camera also has the Russian Firmware Hack which allows for mirror lockup prior to taking an exposure. (I believe you can download & install the original firmware from canon; see here for more info.) Fyi: this camera won First Place in the 2005 SCT-User Imaging Contest "Best Digital Camera Image of a DSO" category. This is an "astro only" camera -- in its current configuration, it is not at all suitable for daytime pictures. Since this camera as no IR filter (and no "clear" filter to optically replace the IR filter), autofocus will not work: images will be out-of-focus, even at infinity. Typical camera lenses will not come to focus when used for astrophotography since the removal of the filter glass sets the focal plane back a little. However, with a telescope this is not an issue at all since the telescope focuser has (usually) enough "in" focus to accomadate the 3mm or so difference. I've even used this camera with a meade 8 Schmidt Newt which has fairly tight focus (big tall focuser) and was able to reach focus with this combo. Getting decent images of nebula, galaxies, etc w/ this camera will require typical digital astrophotography exposures: multiple light frames of 3 to 5 minutes each, dark frames, in addition to flats, etc. (but you probably already knew this already.) I've also had great success getting images from this camera printed on fairly large 11x17 photo printers, with surprisingly good results. There's no substitute for lots of pixels! If you'd like to restore the camera for "normal" use, the original IR filter is included. However, this is a tedious task taking about 4 hours to do it correctly. Please note this camera is USB 1.1. Downloads arent lightning fast, but it is usable. I primarily used this camera with MaxDSLR, though other programs are out there for image capture. Issues: I noticed that one of the segments is out on the small LCD (not the image review LCD). This seems to have no effect on the operation - it might be loose connection, or maybe that segment is no longer responding. |
