The needle tip diameter affects the main jet size because the fuel must pass by both parts before entering the motor. A larger needle tip results in main jet sizes increasing by 2-6 steps over a small tip needle. In the extreme case, no main jet would be needed because the needle tip becomes the full throttle fuel orifice.
