Built between 425 and 430, the Galla Placidia Mausoleum contains classic Roman-Hellenistic mosaics. These intact 5th century examples are the oldest and most complete mosaics found in Ravenna today.
This image shows a golden Cross in the starry sky of the mausoleum dome. In the corners are symbols of the evangelists; Saint John's eagle and Saint Mark's lion. Unseen in this image are Saint Luke's ox and Saint Mattew's man in opposite corners. On the wall below the symbols of the evangelists are Saint Paul & Saint Peter with a key in his hand. At their feet are doves (an early Christian symbol) drinking from a vase.
