Everyone seems to want a photo of themselves sitting on a Roman toilet. :)
Archeologists believe that the public toilet in Roman times was a social event as well. It's believed that slaves would play music here, serve food and drink, tend flower arrangements and burn incense allowing conversations to move seamlessly from the shop, home or library to the toilet. Sophisticated plumbing allowed water to flow through pipes into the toilet carrying human waste away from the city. Over time, even the sewage system in Ephesus would have failed as the harbor filled with silt.
