It's larger than California, Montana and Texas combined. It is home to the 16 tallest mountains in the U.S. Straddling the 180th meridian, it is both the westernmost and easternmost state. It's 425 times the size of the smallest state, Rhode Island, with roughly the same population.
Critics called it "Seward's Folly" when Secretary of State Wm. H. Seward purchased it from Russia for $7.2 million in 1867, but it ranks (along with Manhattan and the Louisiana territory) among the United States' best real estate bargains in history. This was my second cruise to Southeast Alaska. Still, I've barely scratched the surface – the coast from Ketchikan up to Yakutat Bay. To The east, and north, and west, lies a vast land full of many worlds. I hope you enjoy this glimpse of just one or two of those worlds. Thanks for looking! Update: as of 1/9/09 I'm finally starting to add the rest of the photos to this gallery. For the time being I'll keep new photos at the top. |
