Up towards the North Western corner of the Kansai region there's a beautiful area know as Omi-Imazu. It's where you can experience the quiet life in Japan and take in the beautiful views of Lake Biwa, the mountains and rural scenes. It's also a place where you can go skiing in mountains during winter and swimming in Lake Biwa during summer. There's so much do and see in Omi-Imazu and no crowds like in the more famous places of Japan!
Access to Omi-Imazu is via the JR Kosei Line. It's a major stop on the line so even the limited expresses Thunderbird and Raicho stop at Omi-Imazu station, as well as the local, rapid, and special rapid trains. From Kyoto the Limited Expresses take 32mins and tickets start from 2100yen one way. On a local (74mins), rapid(55mins) or special rapid(49mins) the fare from Kyoto is 950yen one way. If you're travelling on a Japan Rail Pass you can travel unlimited on any of these trains, you can even make seating reservations on the ordinary cars of limited expresses for no additional fee.
