The Kyoto Imperial Palace is the Emperors home in Kyoto, although most of the time now-a-days he lives at the Tokyo Imperial Palace. Before the Meiji Restoration (1868) this palace was main palace for the imperial family.
The easiest way to get to the Kyoto Imperial Palace is via Imadegawa Station on the Kyoto Subway Karasuma Line. While you can freely enter the surrounding park, to see the Palace you must apply for a tour at the Imperial Household Agency office or come on one of the two open days every year.
The Lonely Planet Kyoto Guide book rates the Kyoto Imperial Palace Park as one of the top five sites in Kyoto.
