The silver mine at Sala was in operation from the 1500th century until 1908. Having started as a fairly randomly organized digging, the mine eventually grew to a depth in excess of 300 meters with a combined drift length of more than 20 kilometres. The main mineral mined was lead glance with some 1-3% of silver. Over the years, the output was some 400 tons of silver and some 40,000 tons of lead.
The mine and its immediate surroundings is today a museum.
