Some places are just so much more brutal than others, and this Italian factory complex is one of the largest I've ever seen. Being almost an integral part of a city surrounding it, together with its vastness and present state of decay and demolishment indicates that this is something that has been subject to state intervention and subsidies for quite some time.
Viscose is a synthetic fiber, also known as Rayon or synthetic silk and the size of the factory suggest that the booming Italian textile industry created a boom here as well after WWII. Although viscose originates from something as natural as cellulose, the chemical process of creating it is pretty nasty. One can imagine that environmental regulation is one contributing factor to the end of this factor, but the main cause seems to be massive competition from the Far East. In the last ten years, there seems to have been a massive shake-out of viscose companies here in Europe.
The entire site is now subject to demolition and a massive cleanup operation seems to have taken away the worst sins from past times. The vastness of the site together with the various teams working with the demolition made it a bit of a challenge to explore this site. After some hours a sudden fatigue spread and when you understand that you’ve just seen a third of it – at most, then it is time to go. A great place - very chaotic
