Jacksonville Methodist Church After Roof Modification

John K. Lavender and Spunk Lowe did a masterful job of taking away one story of the church - somehow, they just lowered the roof and took out one story. The church is still an active place of worship. It sits on the old site of the county courthouse which was at Jacksonville from about 1810 until 1871.

My mother is Carolyn Clark, and I've been to church here many times. Why was the 2nd story removed?
