This is a typical percussion instrument called "qarqba" which gets used like castagnets in pairs during the performance of the "Gnaoua" tradition which became famous through the festival in Essaouira, Marocco. The main ostinato of the castagnets gets underlined by the bass line of the "Gimbri" bass lute.
