The mouthpiece presents a soft edge against which the player blows while holding the instrument vertically angled from the body. Moving the mouth back and forth and several overblowing techniques allow a wide range of tones.
The name of the instrument represents the old Persian term for "reed" and "bamboo".

The typical sound of the DiZi comes from a small piece of paper which is wrapped around one of the playing wholes, thus vibrating with the air blown in and creating a "fuzzy" sound which is typical for this flute. Artists in China have developed high playing skills with furious techniques during the last 2000 years.

The "Kazoo" is not really an Asian instrument (one could say, this is a worldwide instrument with no resolvable source in history) using the technique of a vibrating membrane inside (like the Chinese flute "Dizi"). Speaking or singing through this pipe shaped instrument creates funny sounds and is beloved by children and comedians worldwide.
