(For historic purpose). Upturned pots cover plants that need to be a bit more hardened off before they can face full sun. Upturned hanging basket pot in center covers an eggplant - I put it there because that spot gets the most sun - it's an attractive enough plant that it won't look out of place in that spot. Bare mulched area covers the remaining trunk and roots of a cut-down river birch tree that prevents me from planting more in that spot. Hopefully the ground cover will green it up.
